I believe the most important thing you can do in seeking a therapist is to find a good match with the person you are working with. A good match in the client-therapist relationship is critical for achieving excellent therapeutic results.
People often ask me how I do volunteer Hospice patient care, volunteer Humane Society work, and psychotherapy work. They wonder how I can listen to people’s problems and be a witness to the suffering of people and animals. They don't realize that I have a profound gratitude for the amazing and difficult work my clients do.
People who seek psychotherapy are usually in emotional pain, feeling raw and vulnerable. They are not as guarded as when they are feeling better about themselves. I look at the whole person; mind, body, and spirit for clues about how their life is working or not working. I listen for solutions rather than focusing on problems. It is an honor to work with people on such a deep emotional level. I have a belief that we are all connected to one another by a force greater than ourselves (not from a religious standpoint but a spiritual one). I believe this force is grounded in connection, love, and compassion. It is a joy to watch people as they discover better ways of being. There is a rewarding validation in the small but significant shifts they make in their lives.
I am passionate about the healing work I do. I am blessed that people trust me by telling me the intimate details of their lives. It’s a privilege to be part of this process. I look forward to hearing from you.
